 I came across this verse in a Panchatantram story. The story starts with some 
elephants trampling and messing up some rabbit-holes. This is how it goes (please 
ignore if there are any errors in transliteration):

 kasmi.mshchid vane chaturdanto nAma mahAgajo yUthAdhipaH prativasati sma | tatra 
kadAchin mahatyanAvR^iShTiH sa~njAtA prabhUtavarShANi yAvat | ��samasta gajaiH sa 
gajarAjaH proktaH ---deva, let�s check out of this wretched anAvR^iShTi place and 
escape to some salubrious climes, and then the elephants go to this other place with a 
nice hradaH | tasya cha hradasya samantAch chAshaka bilAni asa~NkhyAni sukomala bhUmau 
tiShTanti | Being elephants, they mess up the ground by trampling on that sukomala 
bhUmi and killing several rabbits and rabbit babies in the process. This nice verse - 
spR^ishannapi gajo ha.nti�. ityAdi - comes up in the middle of all that blood and gore 
in the story followed by even more beautiful ones.

 May be the verse changed somewhat when it made into Hitopadesa a few centuries later; 
or it could be a simple case of pAThabheda. I have heard that there are at least 3 or 
4 slightly different versions of Panchatantram itself. Please see Mr. Ramakrishnan�s 
comment below.

 The quotation is from Hitopadesa but there is something wrong.  Is it a pAThabheda?

This version seems to be more appropriate.

In management training, they recommend you use passive voice when dealing with 
employess only when it could be inconvenient for you to take responsibility for what 
you say, e.g., �it has been decided that December 25 will be a regular

mouth.

A house that is not soiled by the washing of muddy feet of learned people, where no 
loud chanting of vedas (or discussion of) of shastras (continually) takes place, where 
oblations are not offered to gods (devas) and ancestors (pitR^us), such a house is no 
different than a cremation ground (cemetery).

No drops of water from washing the feet of Brahmins or the loud chantings of Vedas and 
ShAstrAs, (will be of any avail) if they are not accompanied by swaahaa(addressed to 
Devas) and swadhaa (addressed to Pitrus). Those homes(where these are not done) are 
equivalent to the cemetary.

What is not destined for the future will not happen. (Also) what is destined for the 
future will happen (automatically) even without trying. Even if something is within 
the grasp, it will slip away if it�s not determined by fate to happen.

without effort. Even what has come within one's grasp will go away if it is not 
destined to happen.

 preyAn-manoratha-sahasra-vR^itaH-sa-eSha = here is that lover wooed in a thousand 
dreams; 

supta-pramatta-janam-etad-amAtya-veshma = here is the minister�s palace where the 
people are asleep and inattentive

prauDha.m-tamaH-kuru-kR^itaj~natayaiva-bhadram = the darkness is thick, be grateful 
and treat your lover well;

utkShipta-mUka-maNi-nUpuram-ehi-yAmaH = with jeweled anklets raised and muffled, come, 
during this quarter of the night. (let us take off, elope)

 Here is that (your) lover wooed (by you) in a thousand dreams. Here is the minister�s 
palace where the people are asleep and inattentive.. The darkness is thick, (you) 
better be grateful and treat your lover (i.e., my exalted self) well. With jeweled 
anklets raised and muffled, come, during this quarter of the night (let us be off). 

 I have a problem concerning where that �yAmaH� in the verse goes. Is it apprpriate to 
put it in the third line or leave it as it is in the fourth line when you prosify this 
verse?  I went with the way it is in the verse

sleeping or drunk. Make this pitch darkness auspicious out of gratitude. The quarter 
of night is throwing away the dumb bells of the anklet. Come.
