On a different forum (Cha.ndassu in Telugu) I am
writing an essay on ma.ndAkrA.nta. In that
connection, I wanted to look for this metre from
various sources. The obvious first source is,
of course, mEghadUtam. Interestingly enough,
it seems there are 115 sa.ndEsha kAvyAs in
Sanskritmodelled after mEghadUtam!
What kAlidAsa introduced was a
successful ujjayinIwood formula. Out of these,
the two ma.ndAkrA.nta kAvyAs I chose to
give examples were: pavanadUtam written
by dhOyIkavi, a contemporary of jayadEva of
gItagOvi.nda fame. He is referred to as
kavikshmApati by jayadEva in gItagOvi.nda
in a half-serious, half-jestful manner. The second
one was hamsasa.ndEsha by vE.nkaTanAtha,
better known as vEdA.ntadESikan, the great
follower of rAmAnujAchArya.

Both these are entirely in ma.ndAkrA.nta metre.
Both the texts are available on the internet.

Regards! - J K Mohana Rao
