PKR has quoed a very interesting philological excerpt
here.
The association between regional vocalizations of the
vedas and regional preferences for la, Da, zha could
be convincing. There is just one caveat to point out
-- we are faced with this in medical research all the
time: an association does not point the direction of
causality. It is equally possible that the regional
preference for la, Da, zh, etc. (genius of the
individual language) is the cause for the vedic
vocalization in that similar way. And because those
regions are principal sources of the R^gveda/yajurveda
preference, we now vocalize R^gveda/yajurveda based on
the regional language preference.
Additional evidence is needed to determining which is
cause and which effect, modern Vedic vocalization or
regional language genius, no matter how strong and
convincing the evidence that the two are somehow
parallel.
