dear list members,
I would request the list members to explain the meaning of the last sutra in
the visargasandhiprakaraNam of the laghu siddhAnta kaumudI,
"so'ci lope cet pAdapUraNam" (which is ashTAdhyayI 6.1.134, I think). I am
using J.R.Ballantyne's translation and basically am unable to understand
what is the situation meant by "if by the elision alone, the verse gets
completed".
Thanks in advance,
Shyam

Dear list, I don't understand what vizeSam means in this verse and a half from
somewhere in the Karnaparvan of the Mahabharata's vulgate (I have written the
verse down but don't have the text with me):
gaambhiiryaad dhi samudrasya na vizeSaM hi suutaja/
digambaraambhasaH karNa samudrasthaa vidur janaaH//
viduurapaataat toyasya kiM punaH karNa vaayasaH/
>From Nilakantha's commentary I guess that the verse is to be understood in
something like this way:
For indeed, because of its depth, [even] beings that live in the sea, O son of
a charioteer, do not know the limit [? vizeSaM] of the water of the sea, whose
water is clothed in the sky, O Karna, so how much less may a bird [know such a
limit], Karna, even by flying far and wide?
I don't find limit as a meaning of vizeSam, but it feels like the best thing
that can be extracted from the meaning of distinction. Perhaps it means
distinction? They do not know the distinction, the true nature, of the sea?
The context is the parable told to Karna by Salya, of the crow who challenges
the gander to a flying contest and then falls into the ocean from exhaustion.
Many thanks.
Phillip
