Hi, I don't know about dbmcli, but the DBMGUI database creation wizard asks you, once you've entered all parameters, if you want to recreate the database from a previous backup or create an empty one. I believe you don't even have to enter the same dev/log devspace sizes as long as theres enough space in the data devspace for the backup you want to restore.
I've already used that option with a 7.2 SAPDB and it worked just fine.
