Hi All,
I am working on a client server software application using Visual Basic as the
IDE. The application will run only on Windows Operating systems. The server can
however run on any O/S. The software has to be a low cost application and i was
thinking along the lines of choosing a linux O/S for the server. I have a couple
of issues and would be greatful if you could address them:

First: Would it be possible to run the server on Windows 2000 proffessional? The
application will be accessed by about 10-12 users concurrently.

I'm running SAPDB on a win2k server for live deployment and it is quite good. No major hiccups so far. For development I run it locally on a win2k machine, again no major problems. 10-12 users sounds is pretty low amount of users.

Second: I have been suggested to use RedHat O/S for the server ... any pros or
cons please ?

Hmm, I don't think there is a linux version of DBMGUI for administering the database(which is a con) but they do have a web interface and a command line tool for doing so (which is also available in Windows).

Third: I want to install the server in a way that it does not require day to day
maintainence. The software will be deplyoed in a place which does not have
dedicated IT/Support staff. Is linux a good choice here ?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Girish
