yes it's possible to run different versions of SAP DB on same machine.
the independent programs (in indep_prog tree) are downward compatible and must
have at least the version of the newest db kernel.

rpm:
you have to install sapdb-ind (7.4), sapdb-srv and sapdb-srv74.

result is the following directory structure:
/opt/sapdb/indep_prog/...       (independent programs 7.4)
/opt/sapdb/depend/...           (kernel 7.3)
/opt/sapdb/depend74/...         (kernel 7.4)

SDBINST:
for 2nd, 3rd, ... db version select 'none' if you're asked for a kernel to update
and enter the new installation path. version/dependency checks are made by
installer, so you don't need care about it.
