In the short term (0-3 years):


I think you can quite safely migrate to SAP DB, 7.3 and 7.4 will continue to be available and as far as I can tell there aren't any bugs or limitations that absolutely need to be fixed.


In the mid term (2-4 years):


Using 7.4 should be ok, any important bugfixes can be backported from the re-badged mysql version, current plans are to slap on a mysql interface so existing mysql clients can use sapdb, so the internals aren't going to change that much.


In the long term (3-n years):


The mysql people will have worked hard to port/adapt/integrate the sapdb engine into the mysql system and if they have done well you ought to be able to migrate (from real sapdb) to using sapdb via the mysql system without too much pain.
