Actually, it is possible to do, just not as straightforwardly as you might
be thinking.  I'd love to see it, personally. Check out Authorize.net's new
CIM offering.  It allows you to store customer data on their servers,
identified only by a key on your side.  This includes CC numbers.  It does
this in a completely PCI-compliant manner.  In fact, PCI compliance would be
much easier for Auth.net stores if we made an interface to CIM.

It is an extra-fee service, but for many stores might be just the ticket.
