For the sake of the archives the problem wasn't in trml2pdf. With so
many versions floating around (and yes, I've tried quite a few these
last few days) it was easy to think that was where the problem hid,
but in fact in the course of testing the most recent code from openerp
I discovered my installed version of reportlab had a bug, reinstalled
that and my PDFs are fine once more. Granted, I could only find one
version of trml2pdf which threw an error from the bug rather than just
futzing the encoding, but I've now tested it against the trml2pdf
snapshot on Satchmo and all is fine.

So like all the best bugs, it was even easier than I first suspected
(and I knew I was going to kick myself when I got this working
anyway!)
