Sounds like a plan -- I have a solderless breadboard or two kicking
around my storage locker, but I won't be able to get into the boxes
and find it until I find somewhere permanent and unpack all that crap.
What do you envision having available wrt test equipment to test what
the Boarduino is actually doing? A good multimeter, variable supply,
and a scope aren't, IME, particularly optional past really simple
stuff. National Instruments makes some very tasty low-cost USB data
acqusition boxes (~$150 a year ago) that will handily replace a scope
and function generator at low frequencies, and some more expensive
ones that will do the same at higher frequencies and quite ridiculous
channel counts.
Also, a desoldering pump would not be a bad addition to the equipment list. :)
