SaturdayHouse seemed to be focused on startups because those were the people who kept coming back consistently. The startup folks who came to SaturdayHouse changed the direction of my life and I'm glad they were there when I started going. Prior to that, I hadn't known much about the culture or community of startups. Ryan Kabir and Lion have had a big influence on me, too. Ryan had a story about how he spent one day doing everything the opposite of what he would normally do (like in the Seinfeld episode). Lion said something once -- I don't remember the exact words -- but it was about the value of trying things you wouldn't normally do. Reaching for something grand despite any fear or reservations you have that would normally 'cause delay.
So I did. I've started a new career. I've made lots of new friends. I've learned many new technologies. The people I've met through SaturdayHouse and through parallel tech adventures in Seattle have changed my life. The vision for SaturdayHouse may have faded a bit, it may lack a bit in focus, but it's been something wonderful and meant a lot to me and others as well. It may not be a focal point of as much energy on any given Saturday as it used to be -- and hopefully that will change -- but even if it doesn't, it's had a big impact.
