 Excuse the fact I keep appending my rambling here ... Again I've had some
 more thoughts, they might not be of any use at all, and I might be barking
 up the wrong tree so to speak.

 it appears my X64 build also has the same issue ... and on second thoughts
 I don't think it's a permissions issue. I found that my main account
 (jase) works in X, where as the ran account didn't. However I also
 discovered that is I to run the script from console (as in a non X TTY,
 i.e. Ctrl + Alt + F1-6) that I didn't get any errors. As i understand as
 of Hardy, Ubuntu uses pulseaudio (and thus I guess ALSA, OSS, etc are
 interfaces emulated). From what I saw Pulse is setup to run with X
 sessions (rather than daemonised), which my hint to the fact this might be
 part of the puzzle. I assume the TTY doesn't go through pulse.
