I don't use alsa/ao at all, I use the icecast output. And while it may be
buffered, the hicups case a significant gap such that this translatens to
clients being without audio stream data for a short bit.
I cannot confirm your observations just yet, on the machine in question
there is no useful ao/alsa output. However, if this is load peaks
related, indeed lag() could solve it (were it not that it is wreaking
havoc in the request/metadata department) to buffer withing liquidsoap and
this could solve it for now.
