Good point about the non-real-time behavior of sox.
I think that in your particular case, it should work by setting
frame.samplerate to 16000 and frame.channels to 1, since you can resample
the input anyway. It's not the most general and clean solution, but it
should do for now, until we have crazy new operators.
NB: this leaves the question open for our design discussion: we might need
to have interactions between sources that manipulate different
samplerates.
