this decoder won't be used much, and it doesn't use the same abstraction
as the other ones, so it has less assertions.
The decoder produces many channels and simply ignores a channel (issuing a
warning) if there are not enough channels. I guess that this is the most
consistent behavior we can manage.
I will try to review the code for possible missing assertions.
