Hmmm, good call. Recently we have added something initially meant for 
debugging. This is an option that, when turned on, outputs the size of the 
buffer to a file. See: 

* logfile :: string (default "")
    Log buffer status to file, for debugging purpose. Disabled if empty.

Perhaps you can use this to know the length of the buffer..
