I guess that SDL needs an X server to run. However, I have good news for
you: I have just added a decoder for images using camlimages, which is a
library which should not need access to an X server. If you want to test it,
you should install camlimages and try to build the mercurial repository (cf
at the end of http://savonet.sourceforge.net/download.html).
