1. script the install of your application
   2. use a much as possible variable in your installation when you cannot
   use the same file for staging and prod
   3. version your configuration files

i don't see any miracle rules to manage two different environments
i use a different username for each env so that I avoid confusion when I log
onto the different environments

And I would be happy if other could share their recipe too ;-)
