You're right that automatic timetabling isn't on the front burner. 
One thing that has changed since this project began is that we can
also think of SchoolTool as operating within the context of an
operating system distribution that we've got a close connection to,
that is, Edubuntu.  That, and the lack of any great momentum forming
behind the discussions we've had here, makes it seem like the best
course of action is to focus on interoperating with whichever
timetable generation application ends up in the Edubuntu distribution.
