One of my professors in college wrote a timetable and exam setup generator for
our college. Using some graph theory he wrote a tool that ran about one hour
to calculate the schedule, versus about a week with a previous implementation
by a company. The moral of the story is that it requires very good math
skills to implement an effective solution. Note that schools in Germany are
very much in need for such a tool, since students can freely choose their
courses.
