Another question: Is the assumption that the teacher has their own
networked computer running during every class? I don't think that's a
good general assumption to make. And even if so, I think the attendence
GUI needs to be separate from the other Schooltool GUI. The GUI would
need to be able to tie-in with the upcoming "Teacher's tool" in
Edubuntu, for example, or any other equivalent (commercial) teacher's
classroom tool, ideally.
As a teacher who's quite comfortable with computers (read: is a
programmer), I can't imagine entering attendance data in real time
into a web interface -- even if it were a slick hula or google-maps
style web-interface. I've got too much to pay attention to in class to
go back to a computer in the midst of class -- any regular tracking
system I use has to fit onto a clipboard or equivalent.
I would beg to differ, at school here (Chace Community School, (UK)) we
use electronic registration. This system we use currently is called
Serco CMIS, with ePortal.
We do have a PC in every classroom, which were put the to allow
electronic registration.
Basically the way it works is as follows.
When a teacher logs into the web intereface, they are presented with a
list of classes that they are teaching today, with the current class
highlighted, the teachers then clicks on "Take Register", which then
presents them with a table of students with photos showing (really
usefull if you have a cover teacher taking registration, and at the
start of term when when new students are in and the teacher does not
know what they look like).
If a student is present the teacher does nothing for that student,
however if they are absent the teacher marks this using a drop down,
(could be a check box). Presses submit, and the register is done.
This roll call is made quite easy by using the tab key to move to the
next student as the teacher calls the register.
Hope this helps
