Hi Conrad, The source format is flexible at this point. I am trying to map out a work flow and my first test was to convert an hour long .avi file using ffmpeg2dirac. I did not specify to use Schrodinger and I let the program determine all of the other params so the encoding/transcoding (whichever applies here) was certainly not optimized for speed but the time remaining on the encoding after I let it run for about 30 minutes was around 8 hours and the video was not HD.
Ultimately I will be using an HD camera (not purchased yet) and working in some video editing software (still not entirely sure which one yet) I'm looking at Cinelerra but I may go with a windows based software package. The goal is to create HD videos to display on HD tv's from a Linux device of my own making. I figured I better get the work flow figured out before I start buying equipment. When I started playing with ffmpeg2dirac it occurred to me that it would be nice to split the file up among separate machines and then ... well you know the deal (I'm getting long winded here) ... the point is that I have some flexibility with the source format. thanks for your interest.
