Ok, let me try to explain,

Let's say you have an opening like the French,

You have a database which has only French games (as you can easily get),

by merging all the game in to one single game you can then at a touch of
a bottom (backwards & forwards) go through all the variations to get a
feel for the opening.

Furthermore, if you come across a variation which appeals to you it's
easier to dissect it and study it.

Does that make more sense?
