Just as a suggestion:

Would it be possible to "split" the scid package a bit? I
think it is not sensible to package everything in the
standard package all the time. E.g. the bases and books do
not change, also the engines most likely not though the
Phalanx and Crafty engines are that tightly coded into scid
that one probably has to leave them, don't know.

Probably one could include some fetching routine for
db/books/photos... into the makefile? Some --getbase
--getbooks --getphotos ...

Just as the packages get quite big. It would IMHO be better
to offer a "base pack", some "additional files" and probably
one "big pack". Don't think that packaging that differently
would be too difficult. I could create some script in case.
