That is right, and I have been thinking about it for a long time, 
without really doing anything concrete.
I agree that there are many data files that don't change at all : books, 
tactical exercices for example.
But on the other hand :
- some of Scid features depend on these, hence if someone installs only 
scid_base package, some functions will not work;
- most if not all of us have high speed internet access, and to download 
6 MB or 10 MB is nearly the same time (at least for me);
- each release involves some work (Linux, windows, Pocket PC) and I am 
afraid that multiplying packages would mean extra work.
