I generally agree with you about not wanting to do this.  I'm used to  
working with systems that segregate third-party packages into their  
own hierarchy (FreeBSD, Darwinports) and I forget that linux distros/ 
packaging systems sometimes mix them in with system installed things  
(in /usr/bin, for instance).  It is a fair point, however, that this  
is something that is now possible and wouldn't be with my proposed  
change.  That certainly wasn't my intention.

I'll leave to you two to decide about what is appropriate and, in the  
mean time, try to think of a way to accommodate both.
