Installer is not a good thing, as you pointed out - it may clash with existing 
installation and doesn't use distribution's package system.
On the other hand, Scid installed to a specified directory along with Tcl 8.5 
libraries may be an acceptable temporary solution.

To make it clear: I don't like proposed solution, but I feel it is best 
possible. There are two advantages, though: 
- first, developers will be able to start porting right now, so we won't have 
to wait that long for all those nice features of Tcl 8.5
- second, the problem concerns minority of users, so most won't notice.

BTW. I checked that Tcl 8.5.1 RPM is available for Fedora and Mandriva.
