Scid already runs from an USB key! Works perfectly, I use that myself 
from time to time. The users question was, however, if it is possible to 
use a real read only drive. He wanted to store his settings together 
with the installation there, it should not be changeable but usable to 
play a game log into FICS and so on.

When I checked into it, I found that only the points mentioned are 
lacking to have it working.
