added engine Toga-30-32-ja Adding this didn't help. Still can't use training,
or tactical play.
Here are the steps I used to add phalanx:
downloaded phalanx Phalanx-XXIV-Win32.zipunzipped phalanxtransferred 5 files to
./Scid-4.5.2/bin/enginescygwin1.dllphalanx.exeeco.phalanxpbook.phalanxsbook.phalanx
First two files are for the engine and the last 3 are the books. After reading
the README, it stated that by default the books should be in the engine's
location or the DIR can be specified using command options -P and -S
But I don't know if these 3 books are necessary to use SCID TRAINING?

opened SCID
added phalanx engine (MENU|TOOLS|ANALYSIS ENGINE...) (notes for beginners. if
engine analysis window is visible, the fist time this menu option is selected,
this causes the viewable window to disappear. The second time this menu option
is selected; it displays the list of engines activated and has several buttons
to continue)
I select NEW button and proceed to add phalanx and fill-in two textboxes:NAME:
phalanx-24-win32COMMAND: C:/Users/ME/Scid-4.5.2/bin/engines/phalanx.exethen
click OK button and get the following error message:
ERROR MSG: The Name, Command and Directory fields must not be empty
and phalanx is not added to the list, so I try again.I enter the same two
textboxes, but this time phlanax is added to the list. It is item 14.I select
OK.I press F2 to start analysis, but a different engine starts. phalanx is not
the current engine.I use MENU|TOOLS|ANALYSIS ENGINE... (twice. I want the list
to appear.)From the list, I double click phalanx_XXIV_win32. The window
disappears. Now press F2 and phalanx is the current engineNow I select a puzzle
(I created the starting position and I created 80 moves/ply to finish)Now I
select MENU|PLAY|TRAINING|REVIEW GAME and a GAME REVIEW window appears. The
first move is made and two red boxes appear with an arrow pointing to the next
move. Now I select MENU OPTIONS|GAME INFORMATION|SHOW COLORED SQUARES AND ARROWS
to uncheck it. Now I see two red boxes with an arrow pointing to the
destination of the previous move. The next move is still a secret!
Yea! I can work through an already solved puzzle. I make a bad move and in GAME
REVIEW window I see all sorts of information regarding my bad choice. Plus I
can click the button "show solution" to see the next move.
Very nice. As a newbie, this needed quite some time to figure out.
Thanks to Fred Mellender for posting youtube videos, which showed me GAME
REVIEW. Thanks to Kevin Taylor for reminding me about installing engines and
thanks to Benoit for tips and SCID.
I knew there must be a way to play through puzzles.
