Thanks, Benoit. That's good advice about being cautious with using a
particular number such as 1300 for unrated players. I'm willing to just leave
that field blank (is that what you are recommending?) except that my games
database got corrupted when I started entering both USCF and ELO ratings. What
happened is that the W-Elo and B-Elo fields got mysteriously changed to
"1807*". That's 1807 with an asterisk. It took me a lot of time to fix that, so
I decided that, to prevent it from happening again, I would get rid of blank
ratings and use only USCF ratings since I play only in the U.S.

If you've got a better idea for fixing my 1807* problem, please let me know.
And what do you put in that field for unrated players? Thanks for your usual
quick response. You are extremely helpful to the community of SCID users. Thank
you for that.

Subject: Re: [Scid-users] Database Maintenance on Ratings

James,

The only way I can think of right now to change at once all the ratings from
ELO to USCF would be:

- export your database in PGN
- open the PGN file with a text editor, and
- replace the text with a Search and Replace.

I don't think of a way to tweak the ELO files. Other can chime in here.

You can use the same procedure to add "1300" to the players who have no
ratings. However, I advise against it. First, it gives two meanings to "1300",
those who have no ratings, and those who have a rating of 1300. Second, you'd
give 1300 to players who may have another rating. That said, I agree with you
that a blank space is not enough to represent unrated players. There's a
confusion between "I don't know which rating this player has," "I don't care
about ratings much" (e.g. Fischer is Fischer), and "this player has no (USCF)
rating".

You should stick to information you know about players. Otherwise
misinformation can easily propagate. We don't have any centralized facility to
check information, so be conservative in what you add as information.

Hope this helps,

Benoit
