Actually, never mind on the comments above.  I've come up with a better 
third alternative.

I will create a private branch off the main svn trunk to implement 
whatever functionality I need, periodically rebasing my private branch 
against the latest-greatest release in the svn repo.  I'm aware that svn 
doesn't have rebasing capability, but git does, and I can do all of my 
work in a git context (see the git-svn man page).

This way you (gregor) can keep the application design clean, never even 
aware of what I'm doing in my private branch.  I can provide myself 
privately with the functionality which I require, and everybody is happy.
