The first thing I would try is Scientific Linux 5.1 and not 5.0. It has newer drivers. This isn't a CPU problem, it's a SATA driver problem. There is not one SATA driver, like there was one IDE driver. They keep making new SATA controller chips, and as a result, you constantly need newer SATA drivers.

Hi,

I'm trying to replace Vista with Linux. Vista came prepackaged on my 2 n

machines.

I've installed the same Linux on two other machines (also prepackaged ala

Vista) with no problem. They're only a year old.

My Linux installer loads a few things then halts with message: "unable to

find any devices of the type needed for this installation type, and gives
 me
a list to choose from.

None of them will load, but I'm using the list to find possible drivers o
n
the web and load them by floppy when it gets to this part. So far haven'
t
found one that works, but most of these I have no idea what they could be

though I'm learning somewhat.

I think the problem is needed chip controllers, because the main differen
ce
is that the older machines are Pentium D processors, the new ones are
Pentium E processors. Motherboards and chipsets are also different.

I've tried an upgrade of my Linux version, also another similar version.

Same result.
