the problem was that :
Aug 20 17:16:14 catlett firmware_helper[7658]: Loading of
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode for iwl4965
driver failed: No such file or directory

and indeed iwlwifi-4965-ucode-4.44.17-5.sl5.noarch contains
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965.ucode
and *NOT*
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode
A yum --enablerepo=* provides iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode
gave me iwlwifi-4965-ucode.noarch 4.44.1.20-7.0.1
atrpms
So I did :
yum remove iwlwifi-4965-ucode
yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=atrpms install
iwlwifi-4965-ucode-4.44.1.20-7.0.1.noarch
and it works.
P.S. The fact that it is blaklisted does not hurt.
