Hello,
We are going to be updating the sun java in SL4 and SL5 to version 1.6.0. Enough labs and experiments are using version 1.6.0 that the tipping point has been reached and it's time for us to update.
We would like to update on December 2, 2008.
That sounds like a short time, but all the reports we have heard have said that if code runs on 1.5, then it will run on 1.6. We have even heard that java code that is recompiled on 1.6 and then run on 1.6 can be much faster, up to 20% faster depending on the code. We would like everyone who has java code that might be affected to test their code. We are trying to get this done before the holiday season so that it doesn't impart people too much during the holidays.

To test

SL4
-------
      yum --enablerepo=sl-testing update jdk java\*

or you can download rpm's by hand at

http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/40rolling/testing/i386/RPMS/java/
http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/40rolling/testing/x86_64/RPMS/java/
jdk-1.6.0_10-fcs.i586.rpm
java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.10-3.sl4.jpp.i586.rpm
java-1.5.0-sun-compat-1.5.0.90-2.sl.jpp.noarch.rpm

SL5
-------
      yum --enablerepo=sl-testing update jdk java\*

or you can download rpm's by hand at

http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/5rolling/testing/i386/java/
http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/5rolling/testing/x86_64/java/
jdk-1.6.0_10-fcs.i586.rpm
jdk-1.6.0_10-fcs.x86_64.rpm
java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.10-3.sl5.jpp.i586.rpm
java-1.6.0-sun-compat-1.6.0.10-3.sl5.jpp.x86_64.rpm
java-1.5.0-sun-compat-1.5.0.90-2.sl.jpp.noarch.rpm

SL5 x86_64 users might have to install the i586 packages separately.
  yum --enablerepo=sl-testing install java-1.6.0-sun-compat.i586.rpm

Thanks
Troy
p.s. We do know that it is possible for there to be more than one version of sun's java installed on your machine. But there can only be one official version in the distribution. p.p.s. We also know that openjdk is going to be in SL 5.3. But currently it does not have the browser plugin and a couple other pieces that many people need. That can be a different discussion.
