I do not think people begrudge him his accomplishments - at least not
simply because they do not like his religion.. I used to be a fan -
even when I knew he was scientologist. John Travolta, Chick Corea,
Kirstie Alley and many others are scientologists and people do not seem
to have a problem with them. I'm a big Travolta fan. Personally I
can't stand any performer of any faith that rams his faith down people's
throats -- any faith. Most stars do not do that.

Cruise polled generally well until a few years ago--particularly with
women. Cruise has openly been scientologist for years and people liked
him before He was making big bucks then too.. I think he began loosing
a few female fans after he ditch Kidman right before some alimony clause
kicked in, and analytically selected Cruz only to dump her. I don't
think it affected most fans.

I think his likability really tanked in the polls when he fired his
handlers who kept much of his private life under wraps. Word of his
almost businesslike efforts to recruit a wife and cult-like approach to
recruiting people into Scientology recruiting for his faith on the set
and off could not have had a positive impact on his image. Add the
Oprah Couch jumping bit and other "romantic" antics, multiple gay law
suits , attacking Brook Shields on her taking pills for her depression
after giving birth; attacking others who do not share his beliefs on
live TV, and weird Katie control stories getting out- all in less then
a year, how could all that not a negative impact on his image

For me, my admiration waned when I noticed that he was playing the same
top gun character with different settings. Collateral and to a lesser
degree The Last Samurai started to change that for me. With MI3, I saw
more of the same. But, this was not enough to make him someone difficult
to watch. The overexposure of bad publicity was. If you wanted to find
out about War of the Worlds, instead you got bombarded by all these
negative back stories. he seems to have figured out that all publicity
is not good publicity, so perhaps over time his negative image will fade.
