Maybe 1920s Canada didn't seem progressive enough for them? There was a lot of intellectual growth during that period, but conservatism killed it in this country.
There is a documentary on this called Black Russians by Kara Lynch, but it is not available from Netflix. (which is something that has been bugging me about them for a while now.)
