Couldn't we just start adding Py3 compatibility module by module and only advertise it in the developer docs, so (potential) contributors know it's a requirement but we don't have to support it yet? That way, we don't need to get it right in one go, but every time we convert something we add least get feedback from the build bots on 2.X compat. When enough of it works, we can make it official. Hopefully, we could salvage a lot of Olivier's work then, instead of starting over. > As a question, what are the minimum values of X and Y for the next release? We've tended to aim for what's available on the current Ubuntu Long-Term Support (LTS) release, which is currently 12.04 shipping Python 2.7 and 3.2. In practice, we're actually compatible with the version before that, 10.04, which shipped 2.6 and (IIRC) 3.1. When we dropped 2.5 compat, we voted on the ML, maybe we should do that again for 2.6? PS.: Speaking of Ubuntu, it seems they've postponed their migration to Python 3 as the default Python to 14.04; I think they were originally planning to do that in the coming 13.04. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Python/3 -- Lars Buitinck Scientific programmer, ILPS University of Amsterdam ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Master Visual Studio, SharePoint, SQL, ASP.NET, C# 2012, HTML5, CSS, MVC, Windows 8 Apps, JavaScript and much more.
