   GTK+ on X still allows you to choose between Pango and X core fonts
so if you don't need antialiasing or displaying all of Unicode you can
opt for speed. GTK+ on Windows may still allow you to choose to use
Windows native fonts.

   There should still be scope for speeding up Scintilla. You could
try caching pixmaps for commonly used text fragments such as keywords
and operators.
