There are limitations on the amount of text that can be displayed in one call on Windows 9x.
Not sure if it's related, but I've noticed with very very long lines in Windows edit boxes in general (i.e. not just Windows 98) that when things get silly and the text scrolls horizontally for ages, sometimes it just blanks out. I see it all the time with Mozilla's view-source window - long lines just don't display. I'll see if I can find an example, it might help to figure out what's happening.
I've found that highlighting the text with the mouse shows it up - I'd say it is probably a graphics driver problem.
