The way you stated your sentence, one could feel that de-emphasis was pervasive, I just shown that lot of applications still hide the selection, and that MS provides ways for both behaviours.

After a quick survey of "modern" (whatever that means) apps on XP *and* Vista, from Microsoft and others, I *was* making the point that de-emphasis was a pervasive behavior. You were taking the more "micro" and focused argument that *controls* [might] default to no indication of selection when inactive.

I am not sure why we argue while we agree that this feature, optional or hard-coded, would be nice to have... :-)
