One of the features that I enjoy the most is the ports collection. It's like a command line Add/Remove Program manager. Basically, once you set up your cron job to update the program list, you will have a link to the latest version of the software. For example, let's say that a security flaw is found in apache. The apache developers put out a patch. The CVS server is updated with the latest version number, and where to get it. So all you need to do to get updated is: cd /usr/ports/www/apache make deinstall (if you already have it installed) make install clean (and you're done) Since the folder /usr/ports/www/apache has the updated information, it will grab the source code for the latest version, download it, compile it, and then move the config and executable files to the proper directories. Very cool stuff. The kernel is very simple to compile. I also enjoy the firewall package ipfilter. We use it to do some stateful packet inspection at work along with a couple other packages for intrusion detection. I worked for about two days perfecting the setup, and it has run like a champ ever since. I don't think this is a great platform for newbies, but it sure does make a kick-ass firewall.
