radeon 7200 - 9200, rage 128, mga, 3dfx, and gamma cards have open
source drivers. all you need to do is enable dri 4.0 and posibly agp
for
your specific card with drm in the kernel.
and
Have the dri server load as your X server in XF86Config
for my setup I have
<start XF86Config>
...
Load "dri"
Load "glx"
...
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Rage 128"
Driver "r128"
BoardName "Rage 128 RF"
EndSection
...
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
<end XF86Config>
I think that the radeon 8500 pro is the best card to get with
linux. Also the ati radeon 9600 and 9800 have closed source drivers
for linux [like nvidea]
hope this abstract ramble helps you out.
