As background information, I was trying to connect to a Cisco device via 
FreeBSD.  
After some looking, I found that the command that works under FreeBSD is:

#tip com1

I thought I would share that with the list incase anyone's interested.

You will need something like minicom, which is equivalent to Window's 
'hyperterminal' to talk to the serial port.
