I run debian at home and work and have found apt/dselect to be very
nice. It is possible to get yourself in a mess if you don't follow its
suggestions (ie, you install with --force) - but for the most part it's
pretty nice. Its nice to be able to just "apt-get install lftp" and have
it take care of the dependancies/downloading + installation... Especially
handy for packages you just want to have a quick play with.
SuSE comes with a package called "YaST" which does similar things, but
using RPM's. I used SuSE for about a year and found that the main problem
was that a lot of rpm's are redhat-specific and complained when you try to
install them on SuSE...
Ximians redcarpet looks like it will do a lot of the same things, but then
it isn't stable yet, so I'm not sure I would trust it to handle all my
system packages yet...
Billy.
