First things, first, HTML mail isn't particularly nice in Text based
Mail-Clients, which is what many Linux users use, so if you're looking
for a technical answer from a technical Linux person, HTML mail is a
no-no.
But, let's try and be helpful...

We use RH 6.2 as our NIS server (1.3.9-3) and I'm on a SuSE 7.0 NIS
client as I type this, and I get no problems.
Ok, so ypcat passwd is giving the list of users, is there anything
appearing in /var/log/messages when login attempts are failing?
