Sorry if this is obvious, but you don't say what you've tried yet.

Presumably the domainname is correctly set and yptools is installed since
you get the passwd file.

You've added the NIS entry in /etc/passwd:
        +::::::
?

ISR that NIS does not support shadow passwords - I assume that you're not
running them on the RH box?
