More details information about what happening would help ...
Did you change anything else other than the kernel?
Does the computer power up (can you hear cooling fans/hard disk)?
Do you get any BIOS extension messages (graphics cards, for example)?
Do you get the standard POST startup messages (BIOS/Memory test, DPMI
check, ...)?
Does the screen change at all after the POST messages?
Can you still see a cursor?
Does the floppy or hard disk lights come on?
Does Ctrl-X help any?
