Linux should not be a problem to install on your laptop. You will need to partition your disk prior to installing with something along the lines of partition magic to avoid wiping your windows partition. You can also use fips, and theres a red hat version of something or other that can partition your disk also. You could if you like, use vmware, or you may be able to get some of your windows applications running from wine. However you still have the option of duel booting and using windows when you need to. > > I currently use ICQ & MSN and I am wondering if it would be possible to > still be able to use these in linux. Yup, there are countless icq clients ranging in usability from poor to better than the windows client for both. Theres a project called everybuddy, now being obsoleted by gnu messenger which can cope with a variety of different messengers all bundled into the one easy to use client. AFAIK theres no problem using these behind a proxy if they work in windows behind the proxy. There are a few other which i have not used. As far as compiling on the command line goes, most of these IDE's (As like most of the IDE's for windows) are just front ends to editors and the command line compiler, in this case gcc, if you wish to compile foo.c its just a case of typing gcc foo.c and if your c code makes sense to the compiler you get left with a file a.out which is linked all ready to use. This is of course assuming you mean compiling code you have written, if it is an application you have downloaded it is usually just a case of typing a few commands to install your application ./configure && make && make install if all goes well thats it, its really quite simple installing software in linux, and of course if you dont want to compile your source, you can use a package manager such as rpm or apt-get which means you dont even need to compile.
