Thanks. Unfortunately finding a DOS based emulator is not a problem (there are also versions from Rhinetek, Esker, Ericom...). It's getting something to run on Linux. I'm now looking at pseudo-ttys and trying to work it if that will solve the problem. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get mgetty or mingetty to run at the pty end - the log is just full of failed login attempts apparently generated by the banner message. So next thing is to try writing my own getty (it doesn't have to do all that clever stuff - just open the device and see what comes out initially). Scary stuff. Meanwhile I've managed to get hold of the author of the free D460 emulator and he says he'll try to find me the source code - unfortunately it's written in Pascal and assembly. Not that I have anything against Pascal - I just don't speak it.
